Symptoms and diagnosis of dandruff

Dandruff has become a major disturbing element for many but the positive side to this is that it is harmless. Dandruff is a situation where the scalp becomes dry or greasy and it leads to the formation of small white flakes which become easily available. It is not a disease but when the fungus malassezia feeds on the oil of the scalp it leaves dry skin cells behind which turn into dandruff. Before treating dandruff, it is important to understand its symptoms and diagnosis.

Symptoms of dandruff

The simple symptoms of dandruff are white flakes of dandruff on the head or shoulders. If you have psoriasis, then the flakes will look more like silver scales. In case of seborrheic dermatitis the cause of your dandruff, the scalp feels itchy and greasy. The cells die and turn yellowish. These yellowish or reddish scaling is usually observed on the hairline and near ears. The worse case of seborrheic dermatitis can even show its symptoms in other body parts. In the normal case of dandruff, it is usually white flakes and are scattered all over the scalp.

Diagnosis of dandruff

You don’t have to visit a doctor to diagnose whether you have dandruff or not. You can easily diagnose at home yourself. If you feel itchiness or extra greasiness or dryness and can see white flakes on the scalp or near the roots of your hair then it is clear that it is dandruff. You can even check it by rubbing your scalp.
